When is a CAT the “best thing since sliced bread”?

Answer: when it is a tool translators use to help them do a better, quicker and more consistent job!

Shamrock’s English phrase of the week this week is “the best thing since sliced bread”.

Sliced bread is a loaf of bread that has been sliced with a machine and packaged for convenience. After sliced bread first went on sale in 1928, people were so impressed that they began to use the phrase “the greatest thing since sliced bread” to refer to a good invention or innovation or a good idea or plan.

For translators, CAT tools can be considered to be the best thing since sliced bread.  Sadly a CAT tool is neither four-legged, nor cute and furry. It is Computer-aided translation software and helps translators to do their job better and faster. CAT tools are especially helpful with ensuring consistency in the terminology used in large translations or for frequent customers.

At Shamrock we aim to be a 100% CAT operation by the end of 2014. And then perhaps people will say that we are “the best thing since sliced bread”!
